I can’t accurately describe or prepare you for Naples, Italy. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’ve been through my share of unkempt, even dirty parts of major American cities. In fact, you might come to where I live now—in central Los Angeles—and walk away disgusted. However, it’s different than Napoli. I’m either saying this because it’s objectively true or because I’m so used to Los Angeles’s filth I don’t think twice.
We had the same astonishment of dirtiness when we were there about 11 years ago... It appears that some things don't change, but Napoli has great charms!
Perception is such a funny thing, especially as it evolves over time.
On our first visit to Naples more than twenty years ago, I was shocked by the dirtiness. Cue many years later and several more visits and I barely notice/remember the dirtiness, but do recall the charms.
The dirtiest city I've ever seen? Rome, during a garbage strike that dragged on forever. Utterly filthy.
Looking forward to reading more on the housing payment issue -- ours is definitely not as low as I'd like it to be in the long run.
